SIGG Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
On this page you will find all the important information about products.
1. Does the coating of the SIGG aluminum bottle contain nickel?
No, the coating of SIGG aluminum bottles does not contain nickel.
2. Why does my aluminum bottle have a notch/dent at the bottom?
One step in the production of our aluminum bottles is the application of the register groove (notch) at the bottom of each SIGG bottle. This is used for the further design of the outside with the desired color and motif, so that multi-colored screen prints can be placed exactly on top of each other. It is therefore a necessary, production-related element of your aluminum bottle. Even if your bottle is only one color, the PASSERNUT is located at the bottom of every SIGG aluminum bottle.
3. How do I find the right Spare Part for my SIGG bottle?
You can find the right spare parts for your bottle here: Spare Parts & Accessories
4. Does SIGG still produce household products? Are Spare Parts still available for various household products?
No. We have not produced any household products since 1998, as we have focused our production entirely on Water Bottles. There is also no successor who has taken over. Production has been discontinued.
5. What is meant by "do not insert body parts"?
Do not put your tongue or fingers in the opening of the Water Bottle, as they could get stuck and swell up. However, you can drink directly from the bottle without hesitation.
6. Can hot water be filled into an aluminum bottle?
Aluminum is an excellent conductor of heat. This means that the temperature of the filled liquid is also noticeable on the outside of the Water Bottle. We therefore recommend filling the bottle with water at a maximum temperature of 40°C.
7. Where can the aluminum bottle be recycled?
The aluminum bottle can be disposed of at any aluminum recycling point. The various lids also have a recycling code that indicates whether and how the lids can be recycled.
8. How can I order on account?
We do not currently offer invoicing or advance payments for private individuals.
9. How can I exchange or return an item?
You don't like your item? You didn't receive the right product in the post or something is missing from your order? We accept complaints via our contact form. We also need the order number as it appears on the invoice. Would you like to exchange or cancel your order? Please return the package to our address within 14 days of receipt (in the case of an exchange, please state which item you would like to exchange it for). As soon as we have received the goods, we will send the new product or refund the amount (if the goods have not been used). Please note that we will not cover the shipping costs. For detailed information about returning purchased products, please read our Cancellation Policy. If the SIGG product was purchased in a store or on a website other than www.sigg.com, please contact the retailer directly.
10. Are SIGG bottles suitable for the microwave?
The bottles must not be placed in the microwave, on a hot hob, in a hot oven or in the freezer.
11. Are SIGG bottles suitable for the freezer?
Please do not put your SIGG bottle in the freezer. The low temperatures can cause the contents of the bottle to expand, which can lead to destruction or deformation.
12. I need an express order, what can i do?
If you need your order urgently, please give us a call. We will be happy to check how we can send your order as quickly as possible.
13. What is the best way to clean the WMB ONE?
The WMB ONE Top is dishwasher-safe. However, to maintain the high quality of the product, we recommend cleaning the top by hand. The inner sealing ring can be removed, allowing residues behind the seal to be cleaned. The sealing units can also be boiled.
14. Which products does SIGG sell?
Our product range and expertise revolve around our core product: Water Bottles. At SIGG, we offer a wide range of such bottles with drinking solutions for every activity of daily life. We offer bottles made of aluminum, 18/8 stainless steel, glass, tritan and polypropylene. SIGG also has a wide range of Lunchboxes, Spare Parts & Accessories for every Water Bottle.
15. Which bottle materials does SIGG offer?
SIGG Water Bottles are available in five main materials: aluminum, 18/8 stainless steel, glass, tritan and polypropylene. With the wide range of bottles made of different materials, we want to meet the needs of our customers and offer products for different age groups and activities.
AluminumSIGG has been manufacturing aluminum bottles since the beginning of the 20th century and continues to do so successfully. Aluminum is a great material; it is the most abundant material in the earth's crust after oxygen and silicon. It is also light and can be recycled with low energy requirements. You can find more information about the aluminum we use to make our bottles here.
18/8 stainless steel The 18/8 stainless steel used to make our bottles is unbreakable and stands for timeless elegance. Water Bottles made of stainless steel offer optimal hygienic conditions and always remain neutral in taste and odor. Having been a reliable companion for many years, the stainless steel bottle can be fully recycled.
Polypropylene (PP) Polypropylene is a very strong and resilient plastic that is used to manufacture a large number of our bottles (e.g. Pulsar, VIVA, Hero Water Bottles). The high-quality and reusable Water Bottles made from polypropylene are recyclable and free from harmful substances such as BPA. After many years of being a reliable companion, the polypropylene Water Bottles can be fully recycled.
GlassWater Bottles made of glass ensure a pleasant drinking experience and are good for you and the environment. The material is food-safe, does not absorb odors, tastes or discoloration and is free of harmful substances. Products such as Star, Dream and Hot & Cold glass drinking bottles are made in China from heat-resistant borosilicate glass. The Stella bottles are made in Italy from a glass melt of sand, soda and other hand-picked components. The inside of the lid is fitted with stainless steel, so the contents only come into contact with glass and stainless steel. The Stella bottles are also fully recyclable.
Tritan™The patented plastic Tritan™ is absolutely free from harmful substances such as oestrogen-active substances and phthalates. The material looks like glass, but is light as a feather, shatterproof, tasteless and odorless and dishwasher-safe up to 90°C. Like all our other materials, Tritan™ is also recyclable. You can find more information about the Tritan Renew material here.
16. Are SIGG Water Bottles safe?
In any case. Since 1908, we have been using the best and safest materials to manufacture our products. At SIGG we carry out very strict safety tests to guarantee the highest quality of our products. We know that safety is paramount for our customers. Therefore, we focus all our efforts on this aspect before launching a product on the market.
17. Is aluminum safe?
SIGG aluminum Water Bottles are completely safe. We are aware that some concerns have been raised about the safety of aluminum in the food industry, but we would never use aluminum if we knew it would harm our customers. We use a high quality coating so that our Water Bottles are completely safe and comply with all consumer safety regulations in the countries where they are sold. The inner coating used in our production is widely used in various food containers and complies with strict EU/US regulations. In addition, the inner coating is tested hourly during the production process of our aluminum bottles to ensure the highest quality and safety. When it comes to safety testing, we are at the forefront: not only do we carry out the tests required by safety regulations, but we also commission independent testing by third-party laboratories to improve even further.
18. Is stainless steel safe?
Yes. 18/8 stainless steel, which we use for our Water Bottles, is especially suitable for the food industry. We maintain regular contact with our partners in the production plants to ensure that all quality and safety requirements are met. We also carry out safety and quality tests on all Water Bottles produced at our company headquarters in Switzerland. Nevertheless, we do not recommend the use of stainless steel to people with chrome or nickel allergies, as very small amounts of the material can escape.
19. Is plastic safe?
We use polypropylene (PP) and Tritan to manufacture our plastic bottles. Both materials are safe, food-safe and free from harmful substances such as BPA or phthalates.
20. Is glass safe?
Glass is highly valued in the food industry due to its excellent properties. It is inert, so it does not interact chemically with other materials and it is non-porous, so it does not transfer odors or flavors. SIGG bottles made of glass are also free from BPA and phthalates.
21. Is BPA contained in SIGG Water Bottles?
All SIGG Water Bottles are free from BPA. We test all materials and parts of our containers before they go into production and also rely on additional tests in third-party laboratories before the products receive their market approval.
22. What sizes do SIGG products come in?
Detailed information about the size of each product, including: weight, height, diameter and size, is provided on the product detail page. In addition, the size of the bottle is always included in the product name.
23. What is the coating of our aluminum bottles made of? (What is it used for, what is it made of?) Can small dents/pressure marks on the bottle damage the inner coating?
Our aluminum drinking bottles have an internal protective coating. We use a polyester-based coating (similar to that used for food cans) that provides a fresh, clean taste with no metallic aftertaste. The inner coating is flexible, which means that it will not come off if the bottle surface is dented or broken. It is also odorless and tasteless and free from BPA and other harmful substances (according to Ökotest from April 2019, laboratory testers found no metals at all in our aluminum bottle). All materials used for the inner coating comply with all EU & FDA guidelines such as LFGB, EUV 1935/2004, EUV 10/2011 as well as US-CPSIA 2008 and FDA 21 CFR 175.300. In addition, the inner coating is tested hourly during the production process of our aluminum bottles to ensure the highest quality and safety.
24. How are SIGG bottles made?
AluminumIt all starts with a piece of aluminum, the so-called "slug", which has the shape of an ice hockey puck. This is formed into a cylinder using a piston stroke weighing up to 600 tons along a pressing tool. The cylinder is formed into a bottle with the help of up to 26 differently shaped tools, each of which moves the metal further towards the final shape. Once the bottle has reached the iconic shape, the inside of the bottle is coated with our internal lacquer to prevent direct contact between the liquids and the aluminum. Once the shape and the inside of the bottle are finished, the outside is screen printed with the desired color and design. The lid is put on and a visual quality check ensures that all bottles leaving the production line are in perfect condition. Before being launched on the market, each product is thoroughly tested by independent laboratories and checked for compliance with standards and regulations.
18/8 stainless steel We use 18/8 food-grade steel (AISI 304, SUS 304)forall our stainless steel items. 18/8 stainless steel has excellent resistance to a wide range of atmospheric environments and liquids. Under adverse conditions, however, stainless steel can also form rust. However, this can be polished or ground off. The vacuum flasks consist of two interlocking parts that join at the neck. The gap between them is vacuum-insulated. A SIGG vacuum flask has excellent gas absorption properties as it contains zirconium, which increases the vacuum and insulation effect.
GlassSoda-lime glass is chemically resistant, sufficiently hard and very easy to work with. As it can be softened and melted down several times, it is ideal for glass and recycling. Borosilicate glass is an extremely chemical and temperature-resistant glass that is mainly used in laboratories, chemical plants and households.
Tritan™With the injection blow molding process, the plastic is first injected into a "preform" by injection molding. The preforms are manufactured with the bottle necks including the threads at one end. They are further processed in the blow molding machine. The preforms are poured into the bottle mold by metal blow molding using high-pressure air.
Polypropylene (PP) In extrusion blow molding (EBM), plastic is melted, extruded into a narrow tube and then sealed in a cooled metal mold. Air is then blown into the tube and it is inflated to the shape of a bottle. The whole process is a bit like making macaroni and then shaping it with a mold.
25. Where are SIGG Water Bottles manufactured?
We are a proud Swiss company and have always been committed to Switzerland as a production location. Therefore, all SIGG aluminum Water Bottles are manufactured in Switzerland. However, as we have not always been able to find a suitable production partner at the desired location, our stainless steel and glass bottles are manufactured by our partners in China, who strictly follow our production guidelines and quality specifications. We produce most of our plastic drinking bottles in Germany and the rest of our plastic products in China. The origin of the products is always indicated on the product itself or on the packaging.
26. Why does SIGG now have Water Bottles produced in China?
We have chosen our manufacturer in China for their expertise, as they have been producing high-quality thermal products for many years and have the necessary experience, equipment and highly qualified personnel in this field. Our partner in China is also our parent company. Even though the bottles are produced outside Switzerland, we can be sure that Swiss spirit and quality are inherent in all our products.
27. Safety inspections and certificates
Before a product is launched on the market, it is tested by an external testing institute to ensure that it complies with the applicable regulations (e.g. BPA tests, LFGB, 1935/2004, FDA, etc.).
28. Hand wash or dishwasher?
We generally recommend that SIGG Water Bottles are not cleaned in the dishwasher. Aggressive detergents in dishwashers can damage the bottle coating and, in the case of aluminum bottles, the inner coating. Due to the narrow opening of the classic SIGG Water Bottle, dishwashers do not produce good cleaning results anyway. To enjoy SIGG Water Bottles for a long time, you should wash them regularly by hand. The bottle and its top should be rinsed with hot water after each use. Leave the lid open for drying and storage.
29. cleaning of SIGG VIVA bottles
Our SIGG VIVA Water Bottles are made of polypropylene and are dishwasher-safe thanks to the material's high temperature resistance. However, we recommend washing the containers by hand with a mild detergent or our cleaning tabs. This will not damage the printing ink on the Water Bottle and also ensures that aggressive dishwasher detergents do not damage the bottle. Thanks to its wide drinking opening, this type of bottle can be easily cleaned with a brush or sponge.
30. Cleaning of SIGG Hot & Cold bottles
We recommend cleaning SIGG Hot & Cold Water Bottles with two tablespoons of water-diluted vinegar and rinsing them thoroughly with warm water before using them for the first time. After each use, the silicone seals should be removed for particularly good cleaning. To avoid damaging the bottle, clean it by hand if possible. The SIGG cleaning tablets with water or a mild detergent are best suited for this. Products containing chlorine and abrasive cleaners are not suitable.
31. Cleaning of SIGG aluminum drinking bottles
The SIGG cleaning tablets with water or a mild detergent instead are best suited for these Water Bottles (strong detergents can damage the inner coating). The aluminum bottles should not be cleaned in the dishwasher, as this can damage the paint and the inner coating.
32. Cleaning SIGG glass drinking bottles
Wash by hand only. Before using for the first time, clean all parts with soapy water and rinse thoroughly with water. Do not use cleaning agents with bleach or chlorine. We recommend using a soft cloth or sponge with SIGG cleaning tablets or a mild detergent. Steel brushes and polishing agents are unsuitable for cleaning. The silicone parts can be removed and cleaned separately.
33. Aluminum boxes: features and cleaning recommendations
The SIGG aluminum boxes are perfect containers for food that does not need to be stored at certain temperatures, as they have no insulating properties. These boxes are designed for solid food, not for liquids. The aluminum boxes should be washed by hand with soapy water and a sponge, as a dishwasher could damage the paintwork and the aluminum. Aluminum is a metal - therefore please do not use these boxes in the microwave.
34. Which liquids can I store in SIGG Water Bottles?
All SIGG Water Bottles have been tested with many different types of beverages, such as acidic drinks, carbonated drinks, milk, alcohol, apple and lemon juice, etc. However, we do not recommend leaving drinks with natural fermentation processes such as apple juice or milk in the bottle for long periods of time. This natural process can promote bacterial growth and produce gases and strong odors that are difficult to eliminate.
35. Can the sealing ring for the screw cap be replaced?
The sealing ring of our classic screw cap is not replaceable. This way, it is easier to clean and we ensure that no dirt accumulates between the seal and the lid. If the sealing ring has moisture stains or mold, you should replace the cap. The caps should be cleaned frequently and then dried.
36. Is it possible that the paint on my Water Bottle is peeling off?
Regular quality checks guarantee a very durable outer coating. However, deep scratches or dents can cause it to flake off. If moisture gets between the coating and the outside of the Water Bottle, the paint can flake off. However, this does not affect the functionality of the Water Bottle.
37. Are the Water Bottles leak-proof?
All SIGG closures are waterproof. However, closures and seals are also subject to normal wear and tear due to intensive use. We recommend not washing the bottle cap in the dishwasher, but removing it, rinsing it with hot water and allowing it to air dry. It is also often helpful to replace the bottle seal where possible. This is available as a Spare Part from dealers and in our webshop.
38. The sealant is peeling off. What can I do?
If for any reason the inner seal of the Water Bottle peels off, we will be happy to help. The best way to do this is to send an email with pictures of the Water Bottle and an explanation to our customer service team.
